About Innsbruck BACKGROUND: Innsbruck is situated on a plain in the heart of the beautiful Austrian Alps. The conference site is only a few minutes stroll from the “Old City” which dates its earliest origins to Roman times. Innsbruck is the capital of the Austrian province of Tirol and is within easy reach of many well known cities, such as Munich, Salzburg, Vienna, Zurich, Lucerne, Venice, Florence, Rome, Budapest and Prague. Coming to Innsbruck means getting the best of both worlds - the urban sophistication of an historic town and an Alpine playground (Innsbruck twice hosted the Olympic Winter Games). The city’s rich history is interwoven with that of the Hapsburgs, whose wealth and sense of beauty have left their mark. The town is renowned as a cultural center and as a city of numerous art treasures and many historic structures. A stroll around the quaint alleys and streets of the Old City (Altstadt) allows visitors to absorb the atmosphere of this magical town. ACCESSIBILITY: For information on accessibility in Innsbruck please go to www.innsbruck-tourism.at and then click on Sight Seeing at the top of the page, next click on Innsbruck without handicap. Questions about the conference site or conference hotels should be sent to innsbruckconf2010@uno.edu. ALTITUDE AND CLIMATE: Innsbruck is centrally located in the eastern Alps at an altitude of 575 m (approx. 1700 ft.) The highest point in the town’s area is the Western Praxmarerkarspitze (mountain peak) at an altitude of 2641 m (approx. 8000 ft.). The weather in Innsbruck is usually mild in the day (24C, 75F) and cool at night (14C, 55F), but it can vary. Visitors should be prepared for sun, wind, and rain. We recommend packing a sweater for the evenings. BANKS AND MONEY EXCHANGE: The Austrian currency is a Euro. Banks in Austria usually charge a fee for every exchange transaction plus a small fee for each individual traveler's check. Therefore, it is advisable to exchange more than one such check at a time, because the charge for every transaction is rather high. Money may also be exchanged at the Innsbruck Information Office, Burggraben 3, daily 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. or the Main Railway Station: daily 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 p.m. The general hours for banks: Monday to Friday: 7:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. Closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Many banks close early on Fridays! ATM machines are located conveniently around the city. CREDIT CARDS: In most of the larger hotels, in some restaurants, and in many shops you can pay with credit cards. For very small purchases credit cards are not always accepted. CURRENT: Austrian voltage is 220 AC. Appliances such as hair dryers, radios, etc. that operate on 110 volts will require wall plugs and voltage converters. Visitors should make these purchases before leaving home, but they are available at stores in Innsbruck that carry electrical appliances. |
